When I was young, my teachers were constantly telling my mother: “Mrs. Sourvinou, Katerina is a great student but it’s as if she’s sitting on pins and needles…she can’t sit down for a moment!”. I didn’t want to sit down. I wanted to do activities such as rollerskating, riding my bike, wavesurfing, doing acrobatic exercises. My favourite activity though was swimming. I felt free and I loved the feeling of being ’held’ by the water. All those activities were my way of expending my excess energy, as it occurs for most hyperactive children. The years passed, I swimed hard for years and then went on to study Occupational Therapy.
Now I can see that all of the above activities were richly beneficial experiences that helped me to understand and study the function of the nervous system. The creation of Active Aqua Therapy is based on my love for water and movement, as well as my love for children and a deep-seated need to support them with my best efforts.
What is Aqua Active Therapy?
Aqua Active Therapy is a holistic therapeutic program (occupational therapy, speech therapy, physiotherapy, and special education) that takes place in an aquatic environment. It is designed by specialists in order to provide just the right challenge for learning and progress, in an environment that inspires strong motivation, a sense of security and fun.
It is targeted to kids with:
As a truly exclusive intervention program, AAT combines basic elements from methods and techniques that are globally approved for their effectiveness including Sensory Integration, Halliwick, Bobath, PNF, TEACCH, PECS, Sherborne, Therapeutic Listening etc.
Aqua Active Therapy started in 2011 and it has been warmly welcomed at a number of pools in Athens such as the pools of Kolonos, Peristeri, the pool of “Votsalakia”, in the Rehabilitation Center “Anaptixi” and the fitness center “Fitness Star”. At the present time, 20 children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders are attending the program.
The effectiveness of the intervention is directly linked to the children's level of function. This contributes to an increased number of participants awaiting to join our program. Unfortunately, there is currently limited capacity to incorporate them into the program due to space and time limitations at the swimming pools accommodating Aqua Active Therapy.
Nicky, the mother of 8-year old Vassilis, says about Aqua Active Therapy, based on her experience of the last two years:
“Vassilis can now handle the feeling of water on his face and no longer uses foreign towels at the beach (he used to grab any towel he saw in order to dry himself) and he can also wear hats and sunglasses. Last year was the first time we were able to enjoy being at the sea as a family. Vassilis could swim and have fun in the water alone and enjoyed doing so for hours, while I watched from the comfort of my sunbed. This was amazing as the sun bed was used for ‘storage’ the previous seven years, as I had not time to use it.”
Our vision is to create a contemporary and specially designed pool therapy center, providing ideal conditions to support the children’s and their families’ needs. More specifically: secure and ergonomically designed areas, the right temperatures of both the water and environment, specially formed pool depth, free-hanging equipment, and the ability to move about freely in a friendly environment.
The implementation of our goal requires ensuring significant financial resources. This campaign is the beginning of a sequence of actions to cover 100% of the required funding for the construction of the Therapeutic Center.
Your support will provide the keystone in order to cover the first five months of rents in order to begin and proceed with the construction of the whole center.
I NEED HELP
On entering Aqua Active Therapy, one will see a wonderful aquatic world. A marine-blue pool and hanging above it, all those toys and therapeutic tools that are necessary for the development and entertainment of the child. The 3-level depth design will allow even our smallest friends to be able to walk.
The natural lighting will be alternated with artificial when necessary, serving exactly our mood and needs. The walking space around the pool and the locker rooms will ensure safety and access to everyone and free mobility without accidents. As for the parents, a venue will be created to accommodate them during the children’s courses, where they can sit, relax and enjoy a beverage or a refreshment.
The therapeutic sessions that will take place, will be either individual or in groups. The nature of the therapy (occupational therapy, speech therapy, etc) will be carried out based on guidance provided by medical references and the needs of each child that are identified in the initial assessment. The main objectives of the intervention, apart from the above, includes the enhancement of communication, mobility, visual-motor coordination and the ability of selfcaring.
The duration of the private sessions varies from 30-45 minutes.
The cost of participation in the program is low in order to ensure that everyone is able to gain the benefits of it.

We want to warmly thank all the doctors, therapists, colleagues, parents and friends, familiar and as-yet unfamiliar, and all those who have listened, read and supported our story. We’d especially like to thank all those who worked with us, our family and all those friends who have stood by us to help us get to this point. You are the inspiration of our creations! Thank you!
We also know very well that many of you are not able to support us financially you can however support us in a different way! Share our story and help our campaign travel far and wide!
Finally, we have to inform you about the possible risks. As the funding through One-up is only a part of the necessary financial capital for the fulfillment of our vision, there is the possibility that we will not achieve our ultimate goal. The NGO PRAKSIS will manage the funds until we are able to secure the whole of the sum we require. If our ultimate goal is achieved it will cover the first 5 rents in order to finish the constraction of the facility. For that reason, perks will be redeemed at a pool that AAT is currently hosted.
We commit to keeping you fully updated on each stage of our effort via a newsletter that will include pictures from the most recent construction and modifications to our center.
All donations are managed by the NGO PRAKSIS. In other words, your financial support is not provided straight to the entrepreneurs as a one-off cash donation. A specific process is followed whereby the entrepreneur receives a pre-agreed amount once s/he has met a specific set of targets. Upon reaching a specific milestone, new funds are released. By managing donations through an independent and credible NGO we ensure that the full amount of the entrepreneur’s funding, is used to maximum effect, that the businessman is held accountable. This allows us to provide continuous updates to each donor on the activities of the entrepreneur and to ensure that the entrepreneur works closely with us. One-up provides information, monitoring and transparency in order to secure that every cent of your donation is used in the most effective manner possible.
